About Strategic Safety Solutions
Founded in 2012, Strategic Safety Solutions provides health, safety, industrial hygiene, and risk management support services for public works, infrastructure, utility, environmental, and construction projects. Our experience includes contractor oversight, compliance assistance, safety auditing, industrial hygiene support, training, hazard identification, and development of project-specific safety documentation.
We work closely with project owners, engineers, contractors, insurers, and other stakeholders to help identify risks, maintain regulatory compliance, and support safe and efficient project execution. Our approach emphasizes practical solutions, responsive service, and the application of real-world experience to complex operational environments.
Strategic Safety Solutions supports projects throughout all phases of development, from planning and hazard identification through construction, commissioning, and ongoing operational support.
Leslie Birnbaum, CIH
Founder / President
Leslie Birnbaum founded Strategic Safety Solutions in 2012 and has over 35 years of experience in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental compliance, and risk management consulting. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Geological Sciences from Binghamton University and a Master of Public Health in Environmental Health from Columbia University. Leslie is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and previously served as a New York State Department of Labor Loss Prevention and Safety Consultant.
Throughout her career, Leslie has provided environmental, health, and safety consulting services for public agencies, infrastructure projects, utilities, transportation systems, educational institutions, and private industry. Her experience includes industrial hygiene assessments, hazardous materials management, regulatory compliance, site audits and inspections, confined space oversight, and health and safety training.
Leslie has supported more than 40 New York City Department of Environmental Protection projects, along with numerous assignments for other governmental agencies, bringing practical experience and technical expertise to complex operational environments.
Jason Wurzel, CHST, CIT
Vice President
Jason Wurzel is the Vice President of Strategic Safety Solutions and has over 15 years of experience supporting construction, infrastructure, utility, and environmental projects. He is a Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Certified Instructional Trainer (CIT), and OSHA Authorized Outreach Trainer with experience in project safety management, contractor oversight, compliance auditing, training, and risk management.
Throughout his career, Jason has supported a wide range of public works and private-sector projects, providing field safety oversight, site inspections, incident investigations, safety program development, regulatory compliance assistance, and workforce training. His experience includes active construction operations, utility infrastructure projects, industrial hygiene support activities, and implementation of project-specific health and safety programs.
Jason works closely with project owners, engineers, contractors, and field personnel to identify hazards, improve operational performance, and support safe and efficient project execution. His practical field experience and commitment to continuous professional development help Strategic Safety Solutions deliver responsive and effective support to clients across a variety of industries.
